On every C&D Hot Works/Oxy-propane course we discuss the implications of structural stability when burning on steel structures and the need to "chock" and support tanks and vessels when burning them on the ground. That's because our experience over the years has shown those areas to be of high risk.

The need to consider structural support for tanks has been brought home to us by this recent article in SHP where a burner was unfortunately killed during the demolition of a barge on dry land. C&D Consultancy working with City Demolition (Birmingham) Limited

C&D Consultancy Recently carried out a hot works course for City Demolition (Birmingham) Limited early one Saturday morning. The hot works course consisted of two half’s with the first part consisting of all legal requirements relating to the safety of the regulators, bottles and pipes. After the break the operatives concentrated on the practical element were a series of drop cuts, sit cuts and step cuts were carried out. The operatives enjoyed the practical session and trainer Mike Kehoe emphasised the need for leak testing and the correct lighting and purging operations.

In addition to the course City Demolition requested that Mike carried out one to one tuition to bring on the less experienced burners. In the picture we can see Mike and one of City Demolition’s less experienced burners getting put through his paces. The picture shows that he is making fantastic progress cutting through the girder.

C&D run a series of hot works courses and can also assist less experienced burning operatives to achieve their goal.

Cantillon release great hot works training film

When here at C&D we released our short toolbox talks films we did so to help train the industry at no cost and we are really pleased to see that Cantillon have now followed with the production and release of a number of demolition safety films, the second of which is "burning".

Hot Works courses continue to be popular

The demolition industry has had Hot Works courses for several years, but here at C&D we feel that, even though the courses include "the basics" they do not cover the issues with Hot Works on demolition sites.

We decided some time ago that we would offer an alternative Hot Works course that included more training directly relating to demolition and our thoughts have been confirmed with orders for the course continuing to flow in.

Hot works permits and hot works training are a good idea

The video below was sent to us by Stephen McCann Jnr of Forth Demolition Limited who received it from a friend in Lagos, Nigeria.

The video shows the aftermath of an explosion on a fuel tanker barge where hot works were being carried out. The barge was empty but had not been degassed or ventilated and no hot works procedures were in place. The video shows the second, smaller explosion.

Official word is that non one was killed which is a miracle!

Before you consider carrying out any hot works, including grinding work, make sure that your operatives have attended a recognised hot works and burning course so that they understand permits, safety procedures, emergency plans, and how to do the work correctly.
