Network Rail's Lifesaving Rules Series: Working at Height
Network Rail have produced a set of six fantastic and hard-hitting safety films and shared them freely for everyone to watch. They were good enough to win he Grand Prix Award at the EVCOM Screen Awards in March, and we've decided to share them with our readers. Over the next few days we'll be posting them for your viewing pleasure, or displeasure due to the raw nature of the content. Either way, they are all well worth watching, and if you want more, then check out our own set of Toolbox Talks.

Have you considered "Super Toolbox Talks" delivered by a third party?
Here at C&D we are sure that you understand the need to give toolbox talks to your workforce on a regular basis, which is why we developed the set of video toolbox talks several months ago to give a variation in the way that toolbox talks are delivered.
When training, PTTLS qualified trainers (and all C&D trainers are) use a variety of forms of training such as photographs, PowerPoint, video and group work to deliver that training and changes in delivery style are beneficial to the trainee.
It has been proven from analysis of training provided that a variation in toolbox delivery is a distinct benefit and as such we have launched our "Super Toolbox Talks" which involve one of our trainers visiting customer sites once a month to deliver an extended version of a toolbox talk on a relevant topic, which could be Work at Height, Asbestos, Plant, Manual Handling or any other subject.
The talks take around 20 minutes to deliver and we can deliver them to as many sites as required on the particular day, dependant on travel times between those sites. Feedback from our clients, and just as importantly their clients, show that the talks are very well received and are seen as another level of training above the in house toolbox talks.
If you feel that the talks could work for you then why not contact john.woodward@demolishdismantle.co.uk to enquire about price and availability. Talks start from £35.00 per hour plus travel costs of £0.50 per mile.

C&D groundbreaking toolbox talks will soon be available on DVD and with Polish subtitles
Following good feedback to the toolbox talks on the C&D Consultancy Youtube channel and over 50 requests for copies of the talks on DVD, we are pleased to announce that copies of the talks will be available to purchase, in the original format, on DVD from 1st May 2013 along with all of the talks subtitled into Polish.
Those of you who attended the KHL Demolition Summit in Istanbul, that John could not attend following the death of John Snr, will have seen one of the toolbox talks subtitled into Turkish and that subtitling idea has now led to many requests for the toolbox talks to be subtitled into Polish. We have, therefore, commissioned Django, who made the original films, to carry out the subtitling for us with a view to the Polish versions also being available to purchase from 1st May 2013.

C&D Consultancy increase the number of trainers to meet heavy demand for new courses
Following two months of increased orders for the new suite of training courses offered by C&D we have decided to invest in training our staff to ensure that we have more people able to deliver training courses to the PTTLS standard.
Mike Kehoe and Craig Wilkinson (both better known for their work on site with Safedem Ltd and Connell Brothers) are currently completing their PTTLS training in order that C&D can offer a total of TEN trainers with that qualification to deliver demolition related training across the UK and the World.
Initially we expected that four trainers would meet all of our training needs, but the recent order from Rammer for breaker training Worldwide, the great feedback from the toolbox talks videos, and the growth in orders for bespoke environmental, diversity and stress management courses has shown us that we were wrong.
The ongoing investment in the PTTLS courses will ensure that we continue to offer quality training by approved trainers at any time day or night to keep our customers' workforces fully trained.

Toolbox Talks for Electronic Age
C&D Consultancy has taken the bold decision to produce a series of video toolbox talks to improve the consistency and quality of these vital health and safety briefings. Mark Anthony reports.
The toolbox talk – the weekly pre-start health and safety briefing endured by construction workers across the land – is as much a part of the industry landscape as bacon sandwiches, muddy boots and bad language.
Done correctly, the toolbox talk is a major contributor to site safety; a final reminder of the potential risks and hazards that might otherwise befall an unsuspecting worker. Done badly, and they are merely a pre-work tea break interrupted; a lost opportunity to reinforce key safety messages.
The inconsistency of toolbox talks is something that has troubled former Institute of Demolition Engineers’ president John Woodward for some time. But while others might require market research, working parties, consultations and innumerable meetings, Woodward is a man of action. And, together with video producers Django and attachment specialist ECY Haulmark, Woodward has set about creating an initial series of video toolbox talks to help ensure greater consistency.
“I know from my training activities that workers engage better with video than they do with someone reading from a script or a PowerPoint presentation, particularly when that person is someone they work with all the time,” Woodward asserts. “So we set out to create a series of short two to four minute videos to enhance worker engagement and to help reinforce a number of key safety messages.”
The first films cover subjects as diverse as respiratory protective equipment, First Aid, Traffic Management, Pollution and general safety Issues. Woodward says that he also has plans to extend the library of titles and, if there is sufficient demand, will also make bespoke and branded videos for individual contractors addressing their own specific needs.
In typically altruistic style, Woodward is making the initial 12 videos available free of charge. They will be available on YouTube and offered as a free download for demolition companies to use as they see fit. Woodward also has plans to make them available in MP3 audio format so workers can even listen to them in the car.
“Obviously, the main aim of these videos is that they will be used to enhance weekly toolbox talks that are already taking place on sites up and down the country. Behavioural safety is the key to maintaining site safety levels. And to achieve that, safety needs to become a way of life, not just something you worry about when you arrive on site each day,” he concludes. “By making these toolbox talk videos available online, everyone can check them at any time. If a single operative looks at one of these films on YouTube and works in a safer manner as a result, the toolbox talk videos will have been a success.”
All the Toolbox Talk videos can be viewed on the dedicated YouTube channel http://tinyurl.com/bae4x48. To request a FREE download of any or all of the videos, please email John Woodward: john.woodward@demolishdismantle.co.uk
