Institute of Construction Management next two CPD events announced

The Institute of Construction Management has posted details of their next two CPD events.

The first will occur on the 27th May at the St. Francis Social Club at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. The event kicks off with refreshments at 6pm followed by a welcome introduction by chairman Roy Blamey at 6:45pm. Then at 7pm speaker Debbie Green will take the stand. Debbie has been employed as Operations Director for Nemco Utilities Limited for the past 15 years and regularly speaks on Legionella management and water hygiene in the workplace.

This meeting qualifies for CPD – CPD Certificates will be issued at the meeting to all those attending, and attendance is free. However a £5 contribution would be appreciated to help cover costs.

The second confirmed meeting will take place on the 10th June and covers updates on recent changes to health and safety legislation and guidance.

If you would like to attend either event then please get in touch with the ICM directly.

APS Midlands CPD event 13th February

The Association for Project Safety (APS) has sent out a reminder about the Midlands CPD event being held next Thursday, 13th February. The topic is "Another kind of confidence" and will be presented by Andrew Hornby.

Here's a description of his talk:

"The current CDM Regulations place considerable emphasis on the competence of duty holders, but the focus is typically on technical competence. So what about 'emotional competence'? What is its value and to what extent is this recognised by CDM Coordinators, clients and others? Andrew Hornby presents the findings of some recent research into this subject and provides an opportunity for us all to reflect on our own practice. Andrew has spent 15 years in design and construction risk management and is currently Business Assurance Service Leader at EC Harris."

The event starts at 6pm and runs until 8pm. The venue (including free parking) is the Birmingham Medical Institute at 36 Harbourne Road, Birmingham. B15 3AF. The cost is £15 per person regardless of whether you are a member or not.

If you would like to reserve a place, please book online via the APS website.

Directors! When was the last time you did training? Are you aware of your responsibilities?

When the company is busy it never seems the right time for directors to attend training courses as there is always something more pressing to deal with. But what would happen if, God forbid, your company had a fatality or a serious incident and the company ends up in court?

Is "I was too busy running the company" a good statement to make in the High Court? Could you show that you are engaging in CPD and increasing your knowledge?

If the answers to these questions is No, then maybe it is time for you to book onto a Directors Responsibilities Course and learn what you, as the controlling minds of the business, should be doing to discharge your duties.

Courses start from £100.00 per person and are delivered at your premises if you prefer. For further details please contact margaret@demolishdismantle.co.uk

John Woodward to join the ARMI

Here at C&D we advocate CPD and the proof of competency so we have decided that the best way to prove competence in asbestos work is for John to join the ARMI (The Asbestos Removal Management Institute) which is a new joint venture company established by ARCA, TICA and the NFDC.

The institute will be the first professional body for the asbestos industry and its aims are to recognise and encourage professionalism within the industry and promote and encourage greater levels of leadership and management within the industry, in order to meet the objectives of the Asbestsos Licensing Group workplan.

Applications for membership will commence any day now and John is ready to make his application.

Further details of ARMI can be found at the ARCA website at www.arca.org.uk. The ARMI's new website is also available to view at www.armi.org.uk.

Competency - a word that is often used but not fully defined

Many people in the demolition industry talk about needing "competent people" but how is that competency judged? When we at C&D judge demolition submissions we always look at CDM2007 Appendix 4 and BS6187:2011 Appendix A as they set out the requirements.

To ensure that you, as an individual, and your company can fully demonstrate competency we recommend that you become members of the IDE and progress through to a full member with full CPD and then you can apply for the PQP card which is a demonstration of that competency.

Details of the card are as below:
